Corn and sorghum producers from the eastern part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec blocked Federal Highway 190 at the height of the El Cazadero settlement to demand a fair price for their crops. According to them, the federal government imposed an "unfair" price on the grain.
With their vehicle bodies blocking the passage to the state of Chiapas, the protesters lamented that federal authorities set the price of the grain without taking into account the costs and investment per hectare. The federal government set the price for white corn at 6,050 pesos per ton, which they described as "a mockery".
"A lot of money is invested to harvest the corn, and those 6,000 pesos they propose is nothing; it must minimally cost 7,200 pesos; we are not going to accept it," they said.
This action joins others at the national level in other states of the country. The producers pointed out that there is no support from the authorities regarding marketing, as each ton is being acquired for 3 or 4 thousand pesos, when the investment is around 20,000 pesos per hectare.
"We love the countryside, but the government seems not to, which is why we insist that we achieve support, improvements, and revive this countryside that we love so much," the producers expressed.
The sorghum growers stressed that they will continue to fight for improvements for the countryside and continue with their planting of sorghum and corn.
